Open Day 2018 was especially exciting for the department of Sociology, Anthropology (inc. History), due to the enthusiastic participation of a team of postgraduate students who volunteered as exhibitors to represent the department at the event.

Open Day is always an opportunity for departments to engage with learners and parents to highlight different disciplines at their stalls and to motivate learners to consider their academic path. This year, the department of Sociology, Anthropology (inc. History) involved postgraduate students to market and explain the relevance of the social sciences to the public.  Staff members Ms B Kritzinger and Ms O Ntaka were on hand throughout to ensure the smooth running of the event and to respond to queries.   The postgraduate volunteers, however, were completely responsible for creating a vibrant experience for learners and parents – making use of their musical skills by beating an ancient traditional drum and drawing young people into enthusiastic participation.  This event gave the postgraduate exhibitors to practice their organizational and managerial skills to create and maintain an interesting and attractive stall and to tell others about their disciplines and academic interests.  While the department of Sociology, Anthropology (inc. History) did not win a prize for their stall, the young exhibitors were notable in their ability to connect with passing learners.  Their passion and vibrancy will no doubt live on in the memories of the public and other exhibitors alike!
