This dissertation investigates narratives surrounding compliance with the South African government’s COVID-19 prevention measures. The study was conducted in Kwa-Nobuhle in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape province. It discovers how COVID-19 preventive measures affected people's daily lives and livelihoods. The findings reveal an intergenerational dimension to individuals' perceptions of infectious diseases and their responses to prevention methods. This stems from racialised experiences with diseases during the colonial and apartheid eras. Additionally, the study also finds vaccine hesitancy, caused by dependence on social media as information source and by conspiracy theories.
